The employer will compare your resume with others they’ve received. Because you’re seeking a job or career change, you won’t be as experienced as others in the types of jobs you’re applying for. Why would the employer invest in your training when they could hire someone with experience; especially in the current economic climate where employers are cutting costs? |

Hot Tips
#1 – Planning & Goal Setting:
After much thought and consideration, you’ve decided it’s time for a job or career change. Rather than just stumble into another job that pays the bills why not establish a career path that will contribute to your personal and professional fulfilment and satisfaction? Finding such a career will take dedication and commitment to the exploration of your life goals and direction. Imagine working in a career that is aligned with your current life goals and direction rather than passing time in a meaningless job waiting for retirement? CV Solution offer several options to help you explore your life goals and direction. We can then help you translate this into potential jobs and/or careers that are likely to provide fulfilment and satisfaction both now and in the future. Using the tools we provide, you can review your goals and direction each year and take a proactive approach to managing your career.
#2 – Research:
The most important part of applying for a new job or career is being prepared; not only at the time of applying but also in the lead up. Different organisations look for different attributes in their future employees. Some employers recruit senior employees from within so you’ll need to start at the bottom to work your way up. Others recruit senior employees externally to introduce fresh ideas and culture change. In these organisations your diverse background could be exactly what they’re after. It’s essential for you to know what your future employers are looking for so you can prepare yourself and formulate your personal sales pitch. CV Solution offers a range of training courses to help you develop these and other aspects of yourself. Contact us today for our current Training Calendar and to give yourself the CV Solution Edge.
#3 – Preparation:
Having identified the organisations you’re hoping to work with you’ll need to start preparing your applications. Some applications are completed online and others can be handed in personally. Some employers use head hunters for roles paying over a certain salary. CV Solution can put you in contact with the best head hunters in the industry.
In preparation you should select 2-4 people who can provide a good overview of your past performance and reliability. At this stage of your career, your referees should all be professional colleagues who have managed or supervised you in the past. It may also help to ask at least 1 subordinate who can provide an account of your ability as a supervisor or manger. Ask them what they’d say about you so you’re fully aware of what the employer is going to hear and ask them for their current phone number. If they’re based overseas ask for their email address as well. You don’t have to let them know every time you apply for a job but let them know if the employer has indicated to you that they’ll be checking your references. At that point, provide your referees with a copy of the job description so they can provide relevant information to your prospective employer.
#4 – Apply:
There are many places to find job vacancies including online job boards, newspapers and magazines, word of mouth and through agencies and/or executive head hunters. You can also hand in an unsolicited resume to any organisation you wish to work for who is not currently advertising. At the senior level you are better off going through an intermediary like CV Solution than approaching an organisation directly. Alternatively if a role has been advertised you should follow the instructions in the advertisement.
#5 – Selection Process:
In time, the organisation will get back to you with either an invitation to interview or a rejection. In the initial stages don’t be surprised if all communication is via email. Some organisations will offer feedback to rejected applicants and if they do CV Solution highly recommends that you take up their offer.
If you are invited to interview you should confirm details such as the location, date and time of the interview as well as the number of interviewers, their names and job titles, and the style and duration of the interview. Be sure to arrange the day off work and look up location details well ahead of time. Allow yourself plenty of travel time to get there; aim to arrive in the car park 20 minutes early and at reception 5 minutes early. Remember to switch your phone off.
You should also think about how you wish to present your CV on the day. CV’s and portfolios look professional when presented in a display folder. There will be many to choose from at your local newsagent or office supply store, alternatively CV Solution can provide a professional display folder as part of your tailored solution. Your folio should include your tailored cover letter, CV, transcripts and certificates as well as any written referees.

We will be honest in our appraisal of you and in doing so we’ll help you improve your chances at securing the career you want.
