Hot Tips
#1 – Planning & Goal Setting:
There’s no point handing in job applications everywhere if the jobs you’re applying for are not going to work with your lifestyle. If you plan to become a professional footballer, there’s no point getting job that requires you to work Saturday or Sunday mornings! Likewise, if you have to catch public transport to work you’ll need to find work that’s accessible by tram, train or bus.
#2 – Research:
Once you know the direction you’re heading in you can search for jobs that will fit with your requirements. List your requirements and start researching what sorts of jobs will meet them. For example, if you need to keep weeknights free you’ll need to find work that is performed over the weekend. This should be on your list of requirements. You should also research the requirements employers have of their employees. In some jobs, you’ll need a Food Handling or Responsible Serving of Alcohol certificate; in others you may need a First Aid certificate. It helps to know what skills, experience or certification you require so you can arrange to undertake the required training beforehand. CV Solution offers a range of skills training courses so contact us today for our current Training Calendar.
#3 –Resume Preparation:
Having identified different types of jobs that fit your requirements you’ll need to tailor your resume for each one. You can’t submit the same resume for a fast food job as for the paper round at your local newsagency. The criteria are different. Make a list of the key job responsibilities and tailor your resume to highlight any skills or experience you have in these areas. Overall you will probably end up with 4-5 slightly different versions of your resume. You’ll also need a separate cover letter for each job you apply for.
#4 – Apply:
With resume’s tailored for different sorts of jobs, you are now ready to apply. Make a list of employers you’d like to work for. Call them beforehand to make sure it’s ok to drop in your resume. You can also check at this stage who your cover letter should be addressed to. You should dress neatly and turn your phone to silent. Make sure you have fresh breath and throw out any chewing gum before you enter the employers premises (be sure to use the rubbish bin because if they see you littering you can kiss the opportunity goodbye). Ask for the person you spoke to on the phone; introduce yourself and give them your spiel (CV Solution can help you prepare an effective spiel). Thank them for their time and ask if you can give them a follow up call in the next 3-5 business days.
#5 – Follow Up:
Approximately 3-5 business days after you’ve submitted your resume you should phone back and ask to speak to the person you handed it to. Remind them who you are and ask politely if it would be ok to arrange a free trial. It is illegal for the employer to ask you to work for free but its ok for you to volunteer your time. This is often a good way of showing the employer how committed you are and also an opportunity to demonstrate your skills. If you want to learn more about your workplace rights you should check out the Fair Work Ombudsman website at www.fwo.gov.au.
#6 – Patience:
It may take several attempts to secure a job. There are many reasons for this. Firstly, the number of unsolicited resume’s received by business each day is huge. You have to present them with something that sets you apart. By calling before handing in your CV you are showing respect and courtesy. You are also minimising any wasted time by targeting only employers who are looking to hire. Then by submitting your CV in person and giving your spiel, you are making a positive impression and putting a face to the name. Finally, by following up and offering a free trial the employer knows that you’re serious and allows them to test you out in a risk-free way. By using this method, you are sure to secure yourself an excellent part time job. However, there may be other reasons for your knock backs. If you are not having any success, contact CV Solution today and we will work with you to improve your chances at securing the job you want.
